Artist Statement

Places summon memories. As a memory needs a place, a place is also comprehended through a memory. The interrelation between memory and place has always stood at the core of my art. Memories allow me to understand the time and space I current experience, and at the same time, are expanded through new experiences. The world I current experience may be a something in which the past, present and future exist at the same time, and feels as if it is always directed toward the moment space I want to return to. Memories do not simply embrace the past as it had been, but are the three-dimensional time documented by the being. Everything is integrated and seems to be of an open structure. My work starts from observing the structure that transcends the space and time that stretch out as the perception experiences a space, and the layers and grains of memories permeating into the deepest corners of that structure.

 

장소는 기억을 불러온다. 기억은 장소가 필요한 것처럼 장소 또한 기억으로 인해 이해되어지고, 받아들여진다. 기억과 장소의 상호적인 관계는 항상 내 작업의 중심을 이루어왔다. 기억은 내가 경험하고 있는 공간과 시간을 이해하게 해주는 동시에, 새로운 경험으로 기억은 확장된다. 내가 경험하고 있는 세상은 어쩌면 과거 현재 미래가 동시에 존재하고 있는 그 무엇일 수 있으며 항상 내가 돌아가고 싶은 순간과 공간으로 향해져있는 듯한 느낌이 든다. 기억은 단순한 과거를 보이는 그대로를 담은것이 아닌 존재가 기록한 그 지나간 시간의 입체적인 것이며, 그 모든것은 통합적이고 열려있는 구조인것처럼 보인다. 인식이 공간을 경험하면서펼쳐지는 공간과 시간을 초월하는 구조와 세세하게 스며드는 기억의 겹과 결에 대한 관찰에서나의 작업은 시작된다고 할수있겠다.
